Real fur : a champion of sustainability?
Although the production of real fur may raise ethical concerns, when produced in a properly regulated and sustainable way, natural fur has many advantages that faux fur cannot offer. One of the most important aspects is the sustainability of real fur. Because fur is a natural material, it is biodegradable, unlike faux fur, which is often made from synthetic, non-degradable materials and can contribute to environmental pollution in the long term.
In addition, real fur is exceptionally durable and, with proper care, can be used for decades and even passed down from generation to generation. This longevity reduces the demand for new products, so overall it requires fewer resources than faux fur, which has to be replaced frequently.
Functionality: why is real fur unbeatable?
Real fur is not only more sustainable, it is also superior in functionality. Natural fur has excellent insulation properties, making it ideal to wear in cold weather. The natural arrangement and texture of the fur fibres provide temperature-regulating properties that artificial fibres find difficult to imitate.
In addition, the breathability and water repellency of real fur is unmatched, which synthetic materials often cannot provide. Therefore, garments made from real fur are not only stylish, but also offer the wearer an exceptional sense of comfort.
Synthetic fur: an ethical alternative, but at what price?
Of course, faux fur also has many advantages, especially from an ethical point of view. The protection of animal life is an important goal, and faux fur is a great alternative in this sense. However, we must not forget that the synthetic materials used in the production of faux fur can contribute greatly to environmental pollution, as these products do not degrade naturally and can result in plastic waste in the long term.
While faux fur may be an ethical choice, real fur is still unbeatable in terms of sustainability and functionality when produced under ethical, regulated conditions. An important challenge for the fashion world is to find the balance between sustainability, ethics and functionality, and to choose the right materials for future garments accordingly.
